The Invisible Becomes Visible

Things that are visible are brief and fleeting, while things that are invisible are everlasting.

I read this quote last night and it just made me stop for a moment and think. I mean, really think. Ever have one of those moments?

I began to consider the things we all seek after so desperately in life - not materially, because if we are honest we realize material stuff isn't that important. But I'm talking about the things that when we don't get them, we aren't just disappointed, we are devastated - emotionally, physically & spiritually.

I'm talking about the invisible things like love, acceptance, joy, fulfillment, purpose, peace, hope and relationships. Without these things, we can never feel satisfied, no matter how much money, no matter how much fame, no matter how much stuff we have.

Jesus left some pretty specific instructions to believers. He tells us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, strength & mind and to love others as we love ourselves. He told us we were to serve, rather than to be served. He told us we should take care of the orphans and the widows. He told us to make disciples.

When we do these things (love, serve, care for and make disciples), we experience fulfillment and purpose. Our lives show love when we accept others for who they are without putting expectations on them. We experience the joy of seeing someone finding hope and we build relationships when we serve them. We also see others experience that same joy. It's a win win situation!

When someone truly cares and loves and serves others out of an overflow of that love, the invisible becomes visible. It's truly miraculous. Jesus' life on earth was the perfect example of things unseen coming into focus through a human life. When we allow His life to flow through us, we are able to accomplish things we never thought possible - and in the process, allow the invisible to become visible to others.

James 1:27 Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

Colossians 1:15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation.

A Big (Mac) Day for Peyton!

Today I took Peyton out to McDonalds and let her have her first Big Mac. She's a tiny little (almost) 9 year old with a crazy desire to have a Big Mac that has been bugging her for quite some time. I'm not sure why she wanted to try one so bad - maybe because it's called "Big" and she's, well...little? Or maybe it's because she is feeling like she's more grown up than she used to be and once you have that first Big Mac, well, that's it - you're officially BIG?

I've tried to tell her it's more than she can handle, but she wanted to see for herself. We're not big McDonald's eaters, but enjoy the occasional trip and today was one of those days! She was ready and I was willing to let her try to tackle the challenge.

Just to mark the occasion, I decided to take a picture of her eating her first Big Mac. Needless to say, my little girl fell short of actually finishing the sandwich, but I'm glad she finally got to experience the thrill (?) of it. I'm also proud to say she ate every single apple in her Apple Dippers even though the sandwich wasn't quite finished! :) I never once said "I told you so" but her reaction to it showed me she knew it was more than she could handle.

I can absolutely relate to this. Often in life I see something I want and I won't give up until I get it only to realize I've gone after something way bigger than I could handle. Can you relate? I'm pretty sure it's a human tendency we all struggle with. I'm glad God knows what's best for me. Sometimes He lets me bite off more than I can chew only to allow me to learn to listen the next time and to teach me what's best for me. Oh, thank you Lord for your sovereignty!

Proverbs 16:9 We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.
